THE COSMETIC REPORT
October 18, 1996

This week I took on one of my favorite tasks: a new product test. Everyone has been asking me about Prescriptive's new Virtual Skin foundation, so I accepted the challenge and gave it a thorough 4 day test drive. Whether you love the product or hate it, my review of Virtual Skin (http://www.kleinman.com/cosmetic/virtual.html) will help you decide if this product is right for you.

In case you hadn't noticed, I do like a challenge! I decided this week that it was time to see just how far $10 could go at my local drugstore. With so many drugstore lines out there, I figured there had to be some great bargains just waiting for me. Here's what I found:

  1. Jane True to You sheer foundation in Fair $.69 (trial size)
  2. Prestige eyeshadow in C-26 Ivory $2.69
  3. Nat Robbins Creme to Powder Shadow plus Base in Pretty Pink $1.99
  4. Nat Robbins Stay-Put Lipcolor in Misty $2.99

For next week's report and Samples page (http://www.kleinman.com/cosmetic/tips.html), I will have full reviews of all of these products. If you would like to take this same drugstore $10 challenge, email me about what you find. I'd love to hear about your mini shopping spree!

Last week I introduced some new reviews for a few Smash Box products I had tried. Over the course of a week, I also managed to test drive their lipstick. I was not impressed. While I think their minimalist philosophy is great, I like to grab one tube of lipstick and go, not drag three or four around just so I can mix my perfect color. Not only was I not thrilled by the colors, but I didn't like the texture either. It was greasy, slippery, and had no staying power. I'd sooner take my MAC or Aveda lipsticks over Smash Box any day.
