THE COSMETIC REPORT
December 13, 1996

Happy Friday from the Cosmetic Connection!

The response to last week's Cosmetic Poll was incredible! Thank you to everyone who participated. The question was: What is your favorite brand and color of lipstick? Here's a look at the top picks:

  • Number one brand: MAC
  • Runner-up (#2): tied between Clinique and Revlon
  • Number one color: tied between MAC Viva Glam and MAC Twig
  • Runner-up colors
    • MAC Retro
    • MAC Paramount
    • Clinique Sugar Bean
    • Clinique Black Honey
    • L'Oreal Bronze Coin

Of the long-wearing lipsticks, Clinique's new Long Last Soft Shine and Revlon's ColorStay were the leaders. The most popular color family? Browns of every kind, from Bobbi Brown Chocolate to Origins Matte Stick in Malt, was the most mentioned color group, with roses and reds not far behind.

If you'd like to read the complete results of the poll, email me at heather@kleinman.com and I'll forward it to you.

As usual, I've been trying new products like crazy. My most recent is a sample of Cover Girl's new Continuous Wear foundation that I got in the mail last week. The lightest shade of the three in the package (Natural Ivory) looked like it might work for me, so I tried it. Not only was the color way too pink, but the coverage was thick, cakey, and pasty. My husband took one look at me and said, "What did you do to your face?" If the texture had been better, I might have considered trying a more natural color, but it just looked terrible. If you get a sample in the mail, that's one thing, but I can't recommend actually spending money on this product.

My product success this week came again from Aveda. I had the priviledge to try hair care products from their new All Sensitive line, including shampoo, conditioner, and styling gel. This line is designed for people who have sensitive skin and scalp. It is considered "aroma free", meaning it only smells of the plant extracts and not added fragrances. Not only did I enjoy using them, but my husband liked them so much he asked me if he could have them all to himself!

All Sensitive Shampoo
If you have a tight, sensitive scalp that gets itchy and easily irritated, this shampoo is a welcome change that will really make it feel better. My husband has suffered from a sensitive scalp for years, but this shampoo really made a difference.

All Sensitive Conditioner
This light, moisturizing conditioner is good for all hair types. It leaves the hair soft and manageable, and it conditions and soothes the scalp.

All Sensitive Styling Gel
Most hair gels can be irritating to someone with a sensitive scalp, since the alcohol can be very drying. This gel contains no alcohol and has a nice" slip" to it, so it makes the hair very manageable without being stiff or sticky.

It's almost the 15th again - time for a new Feature on the Cosmetic Connection web site. December's Feature, "Pucker Up!", gives tips for keeping your favorite lipstick color where it belongs - on your lips!
